Ad best practices, launch and tracking
Benchmarks from ZenABM's 2026 LinkedIn ABM Benchmarks Report (2,828 B2B SaaS ads): https://zenabm.com/linkedin-abm-benchmarks-report
Cross-format winner: a specific offer + real people + an unmissable CTA. Impressions (not CTR) drive pipeline. Lead with TLAs — ~77% cheaper per click than image ads ($3.06 vs $13.23).
Ad-format best practices
Image ads — the reach workhorse
Benchmarks: CTR 0.42% · CPC $13.23 · CPM ~$59. Works: lead with a specific offer (FREE / $ / deadline — 65% of top ads); real people with names, not stock (47%); one bold, high-contrast CTA button (59%); light humour / pattern-interrupt to stop the scroll (35%); keep it mobile-first — large, uncluttered visuals. Avoid: logo as the hero or stock/AI imagery; text-heavy layouts and UI-screenshot dumps; generic minimalism with no focal point; vague "Learn More" CTAs.
Thought Leader Ads (TLA) — best value
Benchmarks: CTR 2.68% · CPC $3.06 · CPM ~$49. Works: write in 1st person ("I…"), never corporate "we" (65% of top); open with a pain point or an honest admission; put the link in the bottom 25% — value first, ask last (75%); 1,000–1,500 chars, line breaks, 1–3 emojis, specific metrics; use different, credible authors (don't repeat the same post across personas). Avoid: webinar CTAs (0% of top performers); link in the middle or "[link here]" brackets; hashtag spam; posts that read like an image ad from a personal profile.
Video ads — warm-audience format
Benchmarks: CTR 0.24% · CPC $15.61 · CPM ~$39. Works: hook in the first 3 seconds; keep it under 30s; your own captions (LinkedIn's auto-captions are weak); a named SME / ICP on camera; use for retargeting warm accounts and brand awareness; authentic beats over-produced (Zoom-style testimonials work). Avoid: relying on video for cold clicks; over-funding it (TLAs return 2–3× more LP traffic); long intros; adding a produced thumbnail (can kill scroll-stopping autoplay).
Text ads — cheap incremental reach
Benchmarks: CTR n/a · set-CPC · low CPM. Works: punchy headline + one clear CTA; run on set-CPC for cheap, always-on reach; an emoji breaks the sidebar pattern and draws the eye; test a few headline variants; keep them alongside the richer formats. Avoid: expecting volume (low-visibility units); giving them a click budget (set-CPC only).
Carousel & Document ads — storytelling / lead magnets
Carousel: CTR 0.49% · CPC $11.28 · CPM ~$52. 5–7 cards that build a story; strong card 1 (carries ~76% of impressions); CTA on the final card; cards 3–7 earn 5–25× the CTR of card 1. Document: CTR ~0.30% · CPC ~$12.05. Use when the asset IS the product (checklists, frameworks, battlecards, exec briefings, regulatory guides); ungated for awareness, gated (Lead Gen Form) for capture; a strong preview earns the read. A well-built doc ad can drive ~85% more high-intent leads at ~52% lower cost than the same asset as an image ad.
Campaign launch best practices
Objectives by format: TLA / text / video → Website Visits; image → Engagement; document / carousel and any grouped TLA+image set → Brand Awareness.
Start on Website Visits for the click-driving core; experiment with Brand Awareness for reach.
Prune early: once an ad passes 1,000 impressions, judge it on CTR vs its format benchmark and pause underperformers so budget flows to winners. Rough pause thresholds (below ~⅔ of the format median):
Format Median CTR Pause if below (after 1,000+ impressions) TLA 2.68% ~1.8% Image 0.42% ~0.30% Carousel 0.49% ~0.32% Video 0.24% ~0.16% Full benchmarks: https://zenabm.com/linkedin-abm-benchmarks-report
Refresh creatives before fatigue; don't send every ad to one generic landing page — match the offer to the segment.
Campaign performance tracking (in ZenABM)
- Set account scoring / ABM stages in ZenABM and sync to your CRM.
- Monitor account progression: identified → interested → considering → selecting; route warm, high-intent accounts to BDRs/AEs.
- Watch leading metrics with Zena (the ZenABM AI agent) — effective CTR to the landing page and landing-page clicks/month — per ad-set, per inventory type, compared to benchmarks.
- Spend pacing — are you on track vs the monthly budget and the time-to-run estimate.
- Secondary metrics — website conversion rate, deal open rate, pipeline per $ spent, goal-completion rate.
