Performance Max for B2B

PMax runs across all of Google's inventory (Search, Display, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Discover) with one campaign and heavy automation. It's powerful and it's a black box. For B2B, it's an amplifier you add after Search works - never the foundation.

When to use it

  • After high-intent Search proves unit economics and you have a real conversion signal (ideally offline-imported).
  • When you have decent creative assets (images, logos, and at least some video - Google will auto-make bad video if you don't give it good).
  • To scale beyond what pure Search volume allows, once you can afford the learning cost.

When NOT to use it

  • As your first campaign. You'll have no idea what's working and PMax won't tell you cleanly.
  • With weak conversion tracking. PMax optimizes hard to whatever you call a conversion - feed it form fills and it finds you infinite junk.
  • Tiny budgets. PMax needs room and time to learn; underfunded, it spends erratically.

Guardrails (this is where B2B accounts get burned)

  • Account-level brand exclusions - stop PMax from cannibalizing your brand Search and claiming credit for traffic you'd win for free.
  • Audience signals - feed your best 1st-party data (customer lists, high-intent site visitors, CRM segments). Signals guide PMax; they don't hard-restrict it, but they matter a lot in B2B.
  • Negative keywords - available at account level (and now campaign level for many accounts). Apply your junk list. Don't run PMax negative-free.
  • Conversion quality - import offline conversions before scaling PMax, or it optimizes to lead volume, not pipeline.
  • Search themes - use them to steer, but watch the search terms / insights to confirm it's not drifting into junk.

Reading PMax

Visibility is limited by design. Lean on the Insights tab, asset group performance, and (crucially) your CRM lead quality by campaign. If PMax leads convert to pipeline at half the rate of Search leads, it's buying you cheap-looking, expensive-in-reality volume. Cut or re-signal.

Honest take

For most B2B SaaS, the order of value is: Brand Search, then high-intent non-brand Search, then remarketing, then PMax, then broad demand-gen. PMax earns its slot only once the cheaper, clearer wins are maxed out.
